Natalie and Lucia were very fortunate to recently attend the ‘Business Chicks Breakfast’ which featured Turia Pitt.
For those of you who haven’t heard of her or seen her featured on 60 Minutes over the years, Turia was a 25-year-old with double degree in Mining Engineering and Science who landed her dream job with Rio Tinto straight out of university and moved with her high school sweetheart, Michael, to WA.
Ever the adventurous one, Turia made a last-minute decision to take part in the Kimberley Ultramarathon. On 2 September 2011, when the starting siren blared, Turia was one of around 40 runners with 100kms of gruelling Kimberley terrain ahead of them. But just a few hours later, she was fighting for her life after being trapped in an out-of-control bushfire. Turia was engulfed by the flames and left with severe burns to 65 per cent of her body.
Since the accident, Turia has spent six months in hospital, endured 200 surgeries and has had to relearn the most basic tasks – walking, feeding herself, even rolling over in bed. Although Turia’s life is now completely different to the path she was on before the fire, she is still unwavering in her belief that she has everything to live for – and it’s that attitude that we can all learn something from.
Turia is currently training for the Melbourne Ironman (an event that would challenge the best of us), is completing her MBA, and is a passionate philanthropist working as an ambassador for not-for-profit Interplast. Her story of survival and triumph through bloody hard times will make you laugh and cry. She’s a masterful and refreshingly candid storyteller – her TED Talk received a standing ovation.
Natalie and Lucia were amazed at Turia’s strength through adversity and the way she continues to hold herself with such grace.
